Middlesbrough defender Ashley Phillips expressed confidence that the strong competition among the team's central defenders will push the club toward Premier League promotion. Phillips joined Middlesbrough from Tottenham in a permanent deal worth an initial fee of £7m, potentially rising to £10m with add-ons. Middlesbrough currently sits third in the Championship table heading into a three-week international break under manager Kim Hellberg.

Phillips cited the desire for regular playing time as the primary reason for making the move to Teesside. He competes for playing time in a central-defensive unit that also features Luke Ayling, Adilson Malanda, and Alfie Jones. Phillips previously gained Championship experience during two loan spells with Stoke City before completing his summer transfer to Middlesbrough.
