Prospects being prospects and hockey’s positional values being what they are, from time to time the Islanders have had more theoretical centers than theoretically needed. It never hurts to have extras, especially since it’s easier for centers to become wingers…

The New York Islanders face roster depth questions at the center position ahead of the 2026-27 NHL season. Bo Horvat serves as the team's top center and new captain, while Mat Barzal is sidelined with an injury amid continued discussion about whether his skillset is better suited for the wing. Head coach Pete DeBoer had expressed interest during the summer in utilizing Barzal at center.
The team's depth includes veteran centers Jean-Gabriel Pageau and 35-year-old Brayden Schenn, whom the front office acquired at the trade deadline. General manager Mathieu Darche signed Pageau to an extension, prioritizing center depth over winger Anders Lee. Schenn remains under contract for two more seasons at an average annual value of $6.5 million.
