The Lions allowed 23 explosive plays across their first two games of the 2026 season against Buffalo and the New Orleans Saints. During the film review, players were required to explain their assignments and actions on each explosive play while coaches remained silent.

Sheppard stated that internal evaluations revealed approximately 75 percent of the explosive plays conceded were self-induced mistakes rather than opponent execution. Against the Saints, Detroit surrendered eight explosive passes and three explosive runs, while the Bills matchup featured eight explosive runs and four explosive passes. Sheppard identified these explosive plays as the primary problem facing the defense.
