Promoter Frank Warren expressed deep disappointment after Hamzah Sheeraz vacated his WBO super middleweight title just days following a won purse bid. Queensberry Promotions secured the rights to stage Sheeraz's mandatory defense against Janibek Alimkhanuly with a winning bid of $1,001,809. Under the purse split terms, Sheeraz was set to earn roughly $750,000 before deciding to surrender the championship.

Sheeraz cited Alimkhanuly’s prior failed drug test when objecting to the WBO's mandatory fight order. Warren questioned the counsel the fighter has received while confirming that Queensberry maintains a promotional contract with Sheeraz for his upcoming ring appearances.
