The Story in 60 Seconds

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has indicated he is open to reviewing and potentially repealing the 40-year-old ban on drinking alcohol in view of football pitches. Speaking to reporters in New York on Wednesday, Burnham described the long-standing restriction as discriminatory toward football supporters compared to fans of other sports.

The Sporting Events (Control of Alcohol etc.) Act 1985 currently bans pitchside alcohol consumption across the top five tiers of English football. Burnham suggested the reform could begin on a trial basis, though the UK Football Policing Unit voiced opposition citing ongoing disorder concerns.
