The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) is expected to be placed under a special commissioner, potentially ending Giovanni Malagò's presidency after less than four months. Malagò was reportedly not a formal FIGC member when elected on June 22, rendering the vote invalid. Tensions were highlighted in a viral photograph during the Italy versus Belgium match featuring Malagò, CONI President Luciano Bonfiglio, and Italy Sports Minister Andrea Abodi.

CONI President Bonfiglio plans to convene the board on October 7 to discuss placing the FIGC under special administration and scheduling fresh elections for late 2026 or early 2027. Malagò stated he plans to appeal to the CONI Guarantee Board and the Regional Administrative Court, maintaining he is the victim of an administrative procedure.
