Why Celtic should pay attention to new Ipsos data on fan protests
Key Things to Know
  • An Ipsos survey asked 1,904 football supporters how they would react if their club faced financial crises.
  • Among surveyed fans, 16% would participate in protests and 11% would boycott matches or club merchandise purchases.
  • Among highly engaged fans surveyed, 24% reported they would protest and 15% would boycott.
The Story in 60 Seconds

A new Ipsos research survey commissioned by the Independent Football Regulator examined how 1,904 supporters in England and Wales would respond to severe club difficulties. Across all surveyed fans, 25% stated they would raise awareness through fan or community action, 16% would participate in protests, and 11% would boycott matches or club purchases.

The findings are contextualized alongside existing Celtic supporter campaigns, such as the "Not Another Penny" initiative and the Celtic Fans Collective. These groups have previously pressured the Celtic board, including chief executive Michael Nicholson, concerning communication, decision-making, and fan engagement promises.
