England boss Thomas Tuchel preferred Leeds United's James Trafford to Everton hero Jordan Pickford in goal for the Nations League clash with World champions Spain

England manager Thomas Tuchel explained his decision to start Leeds United goalkeeper James Trafford over Everton's Jordan Pickford in a 3-2 Nations League defeat to Spain at Wembley. Tuchel stated that Pickford had done nothing wrong, but explained he wanted to evaluate Trafford's development during the four-match international window following Trafford's positive start to the Premier League season.
Tuchel outlined a plan to give both goalkeepers two starts each during the tournament fixtures. The selection drew questions from observers, including former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson, who suggested Pickford would be disappointed to miss a competitive match against the reigning world champions.
