Blue Jackets land impact player in Knies, but getting rid of Marchenko was key

The Columbus Blue Jackets executed a blockbuster trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs, sending winger Kirill Marchenko, goaltender Elvis Merzļikins, and left winger Miles Wood to Toronto. In return, Columbus acquired forward Matthew Knies, defenseman Emil Andrae, center Steven Lorentz, and a 2027 second-round draft pick originally belonging to Seattle.

Blue Jackets general manager Don Waddell emphasized the necessity of acquiring proven goal scoring in exchange for Marchenko. The club plans to deploy the 23-year-old Knies on its top forward line alongside center Adam Fantilli and right winger Kent Johnson, while Andrae is expected to join the defensive corps.
