I know reason Celtic allowed Stephen Welsh to leave on a free transfer but it’s looking like a mind-boggling own goal

Celtic permitted 26-year-old defender Stephen Welsh to leave on a free transfer during the summer to reward his loyalty. Welsh subsequently signed with Swansea City in the English Championship. Following strong performances under managers Jens Berthel Askou and Vitor Matos, he earned his first senior Scotland call-up from Sebastien Pocognoli, keeping a clean sheet on his debut against Slovenia.

Prior to his Swansea transfer, Welsh spent much of the previous season on loan at Motherwell under Brendan Rodgers. Although recalled briefly by Martin O'Neill for a Scottish Cup fixture against Auchinleck Talbot, Welsh returned to Motherwell on loan before Celtic ultimately terminated his contract.
