Muhammad Ali survived heavy right hands from Earnie Shavers to retain his undisputed heavyweight title via unanimous decision at Madison Square Garden on September 29, 1977. Despite suffering punishment early, the 35-year-old champion utilized his jab, relied on ring experience, and mounted a fierce 15th-round rally to convince all three judges.

Referee Johnny LoBianco scored the bout 9-5-1, while judges Tony Castellano and Eva Shain scored it 9-6 for Ali. Following the grueling contest, Ali's longtime physician Ferdie Pacheco urged retirement and left the team due to mounting health concerns.
