The 18-year-old previously faced rejection after trials at Crystal Palace and Charlton Athletic before earning his opportunity through Croydon-based non-profit XYZ Football Academy.

XYZ founder Lai Abdalla revealed Akpobi initially struggled during his first trial with Wednesday in January 2025. However, academy manager Jonathan Pepper offered him a second chance, prompting Akpobi to complete an intensive fitness regime that ultimately earned him a professional contract in July.
