SAN DIEGO -- The Padres spent September as the hottest team in baseball, surging into the postseason and securing a Wild Card Series at Petco Park. Gavin Sheets, meanwhile, spent most of the month in a walking boot.
The San Diego Padres swept the Chicago Cubs in the National League Wild Card Series following a 4-1 victory in Game 2 at Petco Park on Wednesday night. Gavin Sheets delivered the decisive blow, hitting a pinch-hit, two-run home run off Chicago reliever Daniel Palencia to break the game open.
San Diego previously took Game 1 with an 8-0 shutout behind Michael King and Joe Musgrove, leading after 17 of the series' 18 innings. The Padres will now advance to face the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Division Series starting Saturday night.
