Marvin Hagler refused to let Bennie Briscoe turn their fight into a test of who could absorb more punishment, earning a unanimous decision at Philadelphia’s Spectrum on August 24, 1978.

Marvin Hagler secured a unanimous decision victory over Bennie Briscoe at Philadelphia's Spectrum on August 24, 1978. Using his jab, movement, and southpaw stance, Hagler controlled the distance and avoided engaging in a sustained brawl with the dangerous hometown veteran. Nearly 15,000 spectators attended the non-title middleweight bout, which was billed as the "Battle of the Balds."
Despite suffering a cut near his right eye, Hagler managed the injury while fending off Briscoe's aggressive pursuit. Hagler hurt Briscoe during the seventh round and took the victory on all three scorecards, with referee Tommy Reid scoring it 48–43 and judges John Stewart and Paul Harris scoring it 47–44 and 49–43.
