The Story in 60 Seconds

The International Cricket Council (ICC) introduced updated Playing Conditions taking effect October 1, 2026, across international cricket. The changes apply to new series starting on or after that date. Key updates include penalty runs for deliberate time-wasting by batters, clear distinctions between overthrows and misfields, and stricter run-out rules requiring fielders to demonstrate complete control of the ball when breaking the stumps by hand.

Additional adjustments permit pink balls to reduce bad-light stoppages in Test matches if agreed before the game. The ICC also mandated that late wickets will no longer automatically end a day's play early. In limited-overs cricket, head coaches may now enter the field during scheduled drinks intervals, and a revised leg-side wide interpretation has become permanent.
