Don Mattingly’s brief return as an MLB manager appears to be over. Mattingly will likely be “gracefully dismissed” by the Philadelphia Phillies within the coming week, Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports reported Friday.
The Philadelphia Phillies will reportedly dismiss interim manager Don Mattingly within the coming week, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports. The move is expected to be framed as a mutual parting, with the Phillies likely offering the 65-year-old an advisory role to remain in the organization. Nightengale reported that the franchise seeks new energy and a different voice to lead the clubhouse going forward.
Mattingly took over as interim manager in late April after Rob Thomson was fired, guiding Philadelphia to a 79-55 regular-season record and a playoff berth. However, the Phillies stumbled down the stretch with a 10-14 September record and were eliminated by the Atlanta Braves in the National League Wild Card series.
