Barry Zito is a SF Giants hero for what he did in 2012 so anyone suggesting his contract was a bad one just does not get it.

Writer Nick San Miguel argues that Barry Zito's seven-year, $126 million contract with the San Francisco Giants should not be viewed as one of MLB's worst signings. Despite recording a modest 4.62 ERA during the regular season across seven years, Zito justified his deal with decisive postseason performances during the franchise's 2012 World Series championship run.
San Miguel highlights Zito's vital Game 5 start in the 2012 NLCS, where he threw 7.2 scoreless innings against the St. Louis Cardinals in an elimination game. Zito followed that by allowing one run in 5.2 innings and driving in a run against Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander in Game 1 of the World Series.
