Toronto Maple Leafs general manager John Chayka expressed strong confidence in the team's defensive unit, highlighting the return of defenseman Chris Tanev. Speaking on Real Kyper & Bourne, Chayka described Tanev as one of the best defensive defensemen in hockey, comparing his on- and off-ice impact to Niklas Hjalmarsson. He noted that despite external scrutiny, early results indicate the Maple Leafs have improved defensively.
Chayka also discussed other key roster developments following the club's 1-1-0 start to the season. He explained the decision to acquire forward Kirill Marchenko to help dictate play, addressed the progression of young players Gavin McKenna and Easton Cowan, and outlined a rest-focused strategy for managing goaltenders Sergei Bobrovsky and Anthony Stolarz.
