Former France midfielder Luis Fernandez celebrated his 67th birthday, drawing tributes for his storied career with Paris Saint-Germain and the national team. Fernandez is most famously remembered for scoring the decisive penalty against Brazil in the 1986 World Cup quarter-final after a 1-1 draw, which sent France to the semi-finals.
Former teammates Alain Giresse, Joel Bats, and Philippe Bergeroo praised his courage and determination. Bergeroo revealed that Fernandez intentionally took practice penalties to the left to deceive suspected Brazilian observers before scoring to the right in the match.
