Alex Tuch scored two first-period goals in his team debut to help lead the Washington Capitals to a 5-2 season-opening road victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday night. Washington quickly built a 4-0 lead with additional goals from Cole Hutson, Jakob Chychrun, and Ryan Leonard, while Dylan Strome and Pierre-Luc Dubois each tallied two assists.
Sebastian Aho and Logan Stankoven scored for the defending champion Hurricanes, who fell to 0-2-0 on the young season. Hurricanes goaltender Brandon Bussi stopped 22 shots, while Washington's Alex Ovechkin recorded his 759th career assist, moving within three of Nicklas Backstrom's franchise record.
