The Washington Capitals opened their 2026-27 season with a 5-2 victory against the defending champion Carolina Hurricanes on October 2, 2026. Alex Tuch starred in his debut for Washington, scoring two first-period goals. Cole Hutson and Jakob Chychrun also added tallies as the Capitals built an early advantage, while Ryan Leonard responded to a Carolina goal just eight seconds later to keep Washington firmly in control.
Carolina's goals came via a power-play marker from Sebastian Aho and a third-period outside shot by Logan Stankoven against Brandon Bussi and Logan Thompson. Despite taking six penalties during the contest, Washington killed off over 83 percent of Carolina's opportunities. Goaltender Logan Thompson anchored the defense, supported by double-digit blocked shots from defensemen Matt Roy and Martin Fehervary.
