ST. PETERSBURG -- For the first 180 feet of his dash around the bases, Austin Wells represented the Yankees’ best chance to score in Game 1 of the American League Division Series against the Rays on Saturday. Then he turned…

Austin Wells ended the New York Yankees' best scoring opportunity by getting thrown out at third base during an eighth-inning rally, sealing a 1-0 victory for the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 1 of the ALDS on Saturday. Rays starter Drew Rasmussen had carried a no-hitter through 7 2/3 innings before Wells hit a double down the right-field line and attempted to stretch it into a triple.
Wells ran through a stop sign from third-base coach Luis Rojas before being easily thrown out on a relay from outfielder Victor Mesa Jr. to shortstop Taylor Walls to third baseman Junior Caminero. Yankees manager Aaron Boone described the baserunning decision as a mistake, while Rays closer Bryan Baker later retired New York in order in the ninth inning.
