ST. PETERSBURG – You’ll often hear pitchers lament that they “only made one mistake,” and often what that actually means is they only made one mistake that they ended up paying for. For Gerrit Cole on Saturday, though, it’s hard…

Gerrit Cole delivered a sharp performance in his first postseason start following Tommy John surgery, but the New York Yankees fell 1-0 to the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 1 of the American League Division Series. Cole pitched five strong innings at Tropicana Field, but a third-inning solo home run from Jonathan Aranda proved to be the decisive hit of the contest.
Rays starting pitcher Drew Rasmussen dominated opposite Cole, keeping the Yankees scoreless throughout the night. Despite manager Aaron Boone's decision to pull Cole after 84 pitches across five innings with a rested bullpen, Cole, Boone, and catcher Austin Wells praised the outing while acknowledging Aranda's crucial swing was the difference.
