The Washington Capitals plan to evaluate defenseman Matt Roy upon returning to Washington D.C. after he suffered a lower-body injury. Roy missed the final 25 minutes of Friday's loss against the Tampa Bay Lightning after skating 14:22 in the contest. Head coach Spencer Carbery confirmed the team will assess the full extent of the injury following their season-opening road trip.
Roy's absence led Washington to lean heavily on left-handed defensemen Jakob Chychrun and Cole Hutson during Friday's game. If Roy misses extended time, the Capitals could look to Martin Fehervary to shoulder shutdown duties, promote depth defenseman Dylan McIlrath to the active lineup, or consider a minor-league recall for Ryan Chesley or Justin Holl.
