Former Universidad Catolica figure Mario Lepe has defended Ipswich Town midfielder Marcelino Nunez following his controversial and abrupt departure from the Chile national team squad. Nunez reportedly left the camp prematurely after an apparent falling out with Chile coach Nicolas Cordova, which allegedly stemmed from Nunez being benched during a match against the United States.
Lepe argued that a serious underlying issue must have driven Nunez's reaction, calling the midfielder humble and sensible while demanding clarity from the national federation. He also criticized Cordova's handling of the situation and subsequent public comments, warning that unresolved friction could disrupt the squad ahead of their next fixture.
