Patrick Mahomes discussed his thoughts on Fernando Mendoza’s place within the Las Vegas Raiders’ hierarchy and compared it to his own first season with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Patrick Mahomes compared Las Vegas Raiders rookie Fernando Mendoza backing up Kirk Cousins to his own rookie season with the Kansas City Chiefs. Following Kansas City's 30-27 victory over Las Vegas, Mahomes stated that learning behind a veteran like Cousins will benefit Mendoza's NFL development, drawing parallels to his time studying behind Alex Smith in 2017.
Mahomes served as Smith's backup during his first year before taking over as the Chiefs' full-time starter in 2018. Mendoza remained on the sidelines as Cousins started at quarterback for the Raiders, while Kansas City improved to a 4-0 record to start the 2026 season.
