Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin announced that the 2026-27 season will be his final year playing in the NHL. The veteran goal scorer stated that he and his family made the decision over the summer, deciding to make the official announcement ahead of Washington's first home game to thank fans, teammates, and supporters throughout his career.
Selected first overall in the 2004 draft, Ovechkin surpassed Wayne Gretzky as the league's all-time leading goal scorer and became the first player in NHL history to surpass 900 career goals. Ovechkin led the Capitals to a Stanley Cup victory in 2018, and Ethan Hetu notes that while his NHL tenure is ending, his playing career could potentially continue elsewhere.
