The Yankees acquired Luis García Jr. from the Nationals at the trade deadline. Since then, García has been the club’s regular first baseman, with Ben Rice mostly in the designated hitter slot.
The New York Yankees are considering shifting Luis García Jr. back to second base next season, according to manager Aaron Boone. Acquired from the Washington Nationals at the trade deadline, García has primarily served as the club's regular first baseman while having a career-best campaign with 30 home runs. However, Boone indicated that moving the former middle infielder back to the keystone could remain an option in future years.
MLB Trade Rumors notes that shifting García to second base could resolve upcoming roster pinches, particularly accommodating Giancarlo Stanton and Ben Rice. With regular second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. facing impending free agency, an internal shift would offer lineup flexibility. Despite García's past defensive struggles at second base, the move would allow New York to allocate resources toward other roster needs.
