Tonda Eckert has escaped a ban for his part in the Spygate scandal because it was decided that Southampton had already been punished enough after being kicked out of the play-offs and hit with a points deduction
Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert has avoided an immediate touchline ban, receiving a six-week suspended ban and a £28,000 fine for his involvement in the club's Spygate scandal. The Football Association had proposed a three-month ban, but an Independent Regulatory Commission decided to suspend the sanction. The panel concluded that Southampton had already suffered sufficient punishment after previously being expelled from the Championship play-offs and receiving a four-point deduction.
The commission noted Eckert's deep contrition and cited the adverse impact an immediate absence would have on the club and supporters as key mitigating factors. The suspended ban remains active until the end of next season, leaving the German manager free to lead Southampton in their upcoming derby against Portsmouth. Club owner Dragan Solak welcomed the decision while criticizing the EFL's earlier disciplinary handling of the situation.
