The Office of Rail and Road has rejected proposals for new direct train services connecting London to Wrexham and Rochdale. The rail regulator cited significant pressure and lack of space on the crowded west coast mainline as the primary reasons for the decision. The regulator also turned down requests for additional London-to-Blackpool services submitted by Avanti.
The proposed Wrexham service aimed to build on the town's prominence spurred by Wrexham AFC co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. However, the ORR determined that adding extra trains would reduce network resilience and worsen disruption, though it did approve one additional London-to-Chester evening service.
