Former Chicago Bears and Cleveland Browns quarterback Connor Shaw recounted surviving sudden cardiac arrest while coaching his son Decker's flag football game in fall 2025. Shaw collapsed after feeling dizzy, prompting Simpsonville Fire Department training officer Caleb Carter and an off-duty police officer to perform CPR on the field before using an automated external defibrillator (AED) to revive him in front of his family.
Shaw was hospitalized at Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital and subsequently fitted with an extravascular internal cardioverter defibrillator (EV-ICD). Following his recovery, Shaw and Carter founded the non-profit organization HRTHUDL to distribute AEDs to recreational parks and provide CPR training across the state.
