Upgrading the starting rotation and adding a lefty is a key Pittsburgh Pirates' need, but trading Mitch Keller is just the start of what the team needs to do.

Rum Bunter's Stephen Parello argues that the Pittsburgh Pirates' offseason rotation plans depend on trading pitcher Mitch Keller. Keller posted a 5.29 ERA in 2026 and missed the final two months with a right shoulder strain, leaving him owed nearly $39 million over the next two seasons. Moving Keller is viewed as the primary method to free payroll to pursue an external starting pitcher, particularly a left-hander.
Parello notes that re-signing Brandon Lowe remains Pittsburgh's top priority, which would consume most of the club's available financial flexibility. The author contends that even if Keller's roughly $18 million salary is offloaded, owner Bob Nutting must increase payroll spending to address additional needs such as the bullpen, third base, and bench depth.
