The Pittsburgh Pirates have promoted Justin Newman to the role of director of amateur scouting, according to a source confirmed to Pittsburgh Baseball Now. The position became vacant after Justin Horowitz left to join the Washington Nationals in October 2025. Following Horowitz's departure, assistant general manager Kevan Graves had led Pittsburgh's amateur draft process over the past year.
Newman has worked within the Pirates organization for nearly a decade, beginning his tenure as a baseball informatics intern in 2017. He advanced through the front office over the subsequent eight years, most recently serving as director of player analysis since November. General manager Ben Cherington noted at season's end that the club was conducting a search to permanently fill the position.
