Despite bogeys on his final two holes, which moved him from three under and the solo lead, the overall execution demonstrated a controlled game plan. He consciously avoided the pitfalls of his previous outing at Shinnecock.
Reflecting on his past, McIlroy stated: “[Today] was a day to really just keep yourself in the tournament and not shoot yourself out of it, Rory McIlroy said, which is exactly what I did eight years ago here.” This sentiment underlines his evolution. He recounted a pivotal moment after the 2018 Travelers Championship, noting: “I remember feeling so much in my comfort zone going to TPC River Highlands, McIlroy said, and thinking to myself, _I’ve got this backwards_. _I should be in my comfort zone at Shinnecock and not here._” This self-assessment spurred a fundamental change in his game.
