The WBO has ordered Haney to defend his welterweight title against mandatory challenger Keyshawn Davis, forcing a difficult choice for the champion regarding his next opponent.
A highly anticipated clash between the two undefeated champions is now in serious doubt. Haney, the current WBO welterweight titleholder, and Stevenson, the WBO super-lightweight champion, were on a collision course. But the path has been obstructed by sanctioning body rules. The WBO has formally mandated that Haney must first defend his 147-pound title against the number one contender, Keyshawn Davis. This ruling effectively puts the Stevenson bout on hold, at least for the WBO belt.
WBO President Gustavo Olivieri made the organization’s position clear, stating that no exception will be granted for Haney to bypass his mandatory obligation. This removes any possibility of Haney defending his title against Stevenson next. Olivieri’s statement leaves no room for negotiation. “As of now, what I can confirm is that Haney has to discharge his mandatory against Keyshawn,” he said. The WBO president emphasized the firmness of the ruling, removing any hope for a special allowance that might have permitted the Stevenson fight to proceed for the title.
He reinforced the point. “At this stage, at this juncture, it cannot be allowed as an exception because there’s a mandatory pending.” The comments underscore the rigid structure of world title obligations, where mandatory challengers who have earned their position must be honored.
This development presents Devin Haney with a critical career decision. He can comply with the WBO’s order and defend his title against Davis, a skilled challenger who has confirmed he will move up in weight for the opportunity. Alternatively, Haney could choose to vacate the WBO welterweight championship. This would free him to pursue the fight with Stevenson immediately, but it would mean relinquishing one of the world titles he worked to acquire.
