Clark Holds Four-Shot Lead at U.S. Open Midpoint

Wyndham Clark leads the 126th U.S. Open by four strokes at Shinnecock Hills, with former champion Matt Fitzpatrick and Xander Schauffele in pursuit heading into the weekend.

Wyndham Clark holds a commanding four-shot lead at the halfway stage of the 126th U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills. A group including former champion Matt Fitzpatrick and Xander Schauffele are in pursuit heading into a weekend where conditions are expected to intensify.

Clark built his lead at seven-under par with a combination of excellent iron play and an effective putter through the first two rounds. While he is in control, analysis points to Matt Fitzpatrick as a formidable challenger from the group at three-under. The 2022 U.S. Open champion has a remarkably steady game, ranking sixth in the field for Strokes Gained: Approach and seventh for SG: Tee To Green. He is also gaining nearly a stroke and a half on the field both around the green and with the putter, a balanced profile that suggests his performance is sustainable.

Sam Burns, positioned at one-under par, is also seen as a strong contender for a high finish. He is gaining almost two strokes on the field on approach shots and has demonstrated his skill on similar courses with past victories at the Charles Schwab Challenge and the Valspar Championship. Burns has also performed well in recent majors, finishing seventh at the Masters this year. Maverick McNealy, at even par, is another player to watch, gaining strokes across all categories but most notably from tee to green. His putting has been neutral, suggesting significant room for improvement.

The challenge for the chasing pack is clear. While Xander Schauffele is also at three-under, his success has been largely tied to his putting, and the rest of his game will need to sharpen if he is to contend. The primary obstacle for all players will be the course itself. Shinnecock Hills is expected to become progressively firmer and faster, placing a premium on precision and control. Clark’s four-shot advantage is substantial, but the historic difficulty of a U.S. Open weekend leaves the competition open.
