Collin Morikawa’s golf equipment is a masterclass in synchronisation, with every component engineered to produce one specific result: a predictable left-to-right fade. The entire setup is reverse-engineered from his TaylorMade TP5x golf ball, ensuring his signature shot holds its line consistently.
The philosophy starts with the ball itself. According to TaylorMade’s Adrian Rietveld, the clubs are designed to work with its flight characteristics. “His golf clubs are set up with this golf ball that this golf ball moves. It moves left to right,” Rietveld said. “For him, it is very important that the ball does not hold its line… The ball will never over-cut, but it will always move.” This principle is clear in his Qi10 LS driver, which is set to a precise 9.75 degrees of loft. “You have to have loft, otherwise the ball’s going to go left and not get up in the air,” Rietveld noted. “Loft is your number one influence on spin.” Rietveld said: “This is a great piece of equipment for when you talk about the spin characteristics of this titanium head, Rietveld said, You can get so much weight in here. This has got 24 plus that 25 grams of movable weight. That’s a lot.”
This tailored approach extends through the bag. His iron set is a strategic combination, using a P-DHY utility and P7CB long irons for forgiveness before transitioning to P730 blades from the 7-iron down for scoring control. “When you get into the long irons… the drop-off for a mishit is really punishing,” Rietveld explained. “You give something that’s a little hotter off-center, so your drop-off is not as much.” His wedge setup is also highly customized. The 60-degree Milled Grind 4 is built with a soft-stepped 6-iron shaft, a unique build designed for maximum feel. “A 6-iron shaft is a lot softer and whippy at the bottom than a pitching wedge shaft. What he gets out of this is he’s getting feel in the head,” Rietveld added. “It was an experiment that worked and he’s not looked back.”
Even Morikawa’s Spider Tour X putter is specially modified. To avoid altering the face angle by bending the hosel for loft, TaylorMade CNC-milled 4 degrees of loft directly into the face insert. This preserves the visual alignment Morikawa prefers while optimizing roll. The entire system, from a D1 swing weight in most clubs to the specific shaft in his lob wedge, is designed to remove variables. It provides a stable foundation that allows one of the world’s best ball-strikers to trust his swing under major championship pressure.
