The Cleveland Guardians defeated the Chicago White Sox 2-0 in Game 5 of the American League Division Series on Saturday night at Progressive Field to clinch the series. Right-hander Gavin Williams set a franchise postseason record with 12 strikeouts, while Jose Ramirez hit a decisive solo home run in the fourth inning off Sean Burke to lead Cleveland to the ALCS.
Chicago's high-powered offense struggled, striking out an MLB nine-inning postseason record 21 times in the defeat. Relievers Erik Sabrowski and Cade Smith helped secure the shutout for the Guardians, stranding bases loaded in the sixth when Sabrowski struck out Munetaka Murakami to preserve the lead.
