Shakur Stevenson is backing David Benavidez to defeat Jai Opetaia in a potential cruiserweight showdown. Stevenson called Benavidez a ‘beast’ as the newly crowned three-division champion disrupts the 200lb title picture, potentially lining up a different fight against champion Noel Mikaelian.
The debate over the cruiserweight division’s true king has intensified since Benavidez moved up in weight. While Jai Opetaia is widely considered the top fighter at 200lbs, Benavidez’s recent title wins have immediately positioned him as a primary threat. Stevenson, one of boxing’s sharpest minds, believes the natural super middleweight has what it takes to beat the established cruiserweight. He stated plainly who he favors in the matchup. “I’ve got Benavidez. I think he is a beast – you have to be on an elite level to even be in the ring with him.”
