Alistair Johnston to Everton transfer revival met with emphatic answer as Celtic star edges closer to injury comeback
Key Things to Know
  • Alan Stubbs doubts Everton will make a renewed move for Celtic right-back Alistair Johnston in January.
  • Celtic previously rejected summer advances after Everton failed to meet the club's £15million-plus valuation for a permanent deal.
  • Stubbs believes the arrival of Ainsley Maitland-Niles resolved Everton's right-back requirements for the season.
The Story in 60 Seconds

Former Celtic and Everton defender Alan Stubbs believes Everton will not revive their interest in Alistair Johnston during the January transfer window. Everton attempted to sign the 27-year-old Canadian right-back in the summer, but Celtic held firm on their valuation of over £15 million before a hamstring injury sidelined the defender.

Stubbs noted that Everton already resolved their defensive needs by signing Ainsley Maitland-Niles, making a renewed bid unlikely unless circumstances change. Meanwhile, Celtic manager Martin O'Neill confirmed Johnston is making encouraging progress and has returned to training on the grass at Lennoxtown.
