The Toronto Maple Leafs could be staring at another serious Chris Tanev injury, though there encouraging signs.

Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Chris Tanev left Saturday's game after taking an elbow to the right rib cage from Colorado Avalanche forward Artturi Lehkonen. Sports and rehab specialist Darren McConaghy suggested the hit could involve a rib or cartilage injury, or potentially trigger a reaction to Tanev's previous core muscle surgery.
Maple Leafs coach Jim Hiller did not provide an immediate postgame update on Tanev's status, though reports noted the blueliner appeared well enough. Despite losing Tanev, Toronto secured a 6-3 victory over the Avalanche behind five points from William Nylander and four from Auston Matthews.
