Steve Smith did not take the field for South Africa's second innings on Day 4 of the first Test in Durban after being struck on the helmet by an Anrich Nortje bouncer. The former Australia captain passed an initial on-field concussion assessment, changed his helmet, and scored 27 runs before being dismissed. Cricket Australia confirmed that Smith will undergo further evaluation, with an update expected soon.
Michael Neser substituted for Smith in the fielding cordon as South Africa began their chase. Australia is already managing tour injuries, including Cameron Green's abdominal strain and Josh Inglis's fractured finger, which led to call-ups for Nic Maddinson and Sam Harper.
