Arizona State University is in discussions with Colorado Avalanche assistant Dave Hakstol to become the next head coach of its men's hockey team. Colorado granted permission for Hakstol to interview, and ASU is expected to make a final decision this week. Hakstol previously coached the Philadelphia Flyers, the Seattle Kraken, and enjoyed an 11-year NCAA run with North Dakota.
The opening follows the administrative leave of former coach Greg Powers after 21-year-old defenseman Matthew Mayich collapsed from severe heat stroke during an outdoor workout on August 20. Powers was placed on leave in late September after players sent an anonymous letter disputing the university's initial review of safety conditions.
