‘Team That’s Running it Back’: Phillies Get New Don Mattingly Update, but a Major Question Remains

Don Mattingly has emerged as a top managerial option for the Philadelphia Phillies after target Alex Cora declined the role. Mattingly led Philadelphia to a 79-55 regular-season record after taking over following a 9-19 start, earning public support from players including Kyle Schwarber. However, former outfielder Ruben Amaro Jr. noted that Mattingly's willingness to stay could depend on whether the front office makes major roster improvements.

The Phillies struggled with a bullpen ranked 21st in ERA, which blew 23 saves and contributed to an early postseason exit against the Atlanta Braves. Phillies president Dave Dombrowski must decide whether to remove the interim tag from Mattingly, who remains under contract for next season, to avoid an awkward coaching dynamic.
