South Africa need 319 runs on the final day of the first Test.
Australia batter Steve Smith missed fielding duties in South Africa's second innings in Durban after being struck on the helmet. The veteran was hit by an Anrich Nortje bouncer during the 43rd over on day four of the first Test. Although Smith passed on-field concussion checks and continued batting to score 27 runs, Michael Neser replaced him on the field.
Australia declared their second innings to set South Africa a target of 421 runs. South Africa closed day four at 102/4, needing 319 more runs to win on the final day, while team medical staff monitor Smith ahead of the second Test beginning October 18.
