Study: Steelers Receivers Simply Aren’t Separating Well Enough
Key Things to Know
  • Clayton Eckert argues Pittsburgh Steelers receivers, led by DK Metcalf, are struggling to create sufficient separation.
  • DK Metcalf ranks eighth-worst among 139 NFL qualifiers with an overall separation rate of 24.2 percent.
  • Metcalf has also struggled in contested situations, posting a contested catch rate of only 30 percent.
The Story in 60 Seconds

Clayton Eckert of Steelers Depot analyzes route data showing that Pittsburgh Steelers primary receiver DK Metcalf is struggling severely to generate separation. Metcalf holds an overall separation rate of 24.2 percent, ranking eighth-worst among 139 qualifiers in the NFL. Furthermore, his contested catch rate sits at just 30 percent, which compounds the team's ongoing passing difficulties.

In contrast, other Steelers pass catchers have fared much better overall, with tight end Pat Freiermuth leading the squad at 63.2 percent separation. Eckert notes that while tight ends and secondary targets create adequate space, Metcalf's poor separation across man, zone, and early downs significantly hinders quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh offense.
