By locking up Payton Pritchard to a new extension, the Celtics capitalized on the CBA rules to secure a major win-win deal, proving their long-term vision paid off.

The Boston Celtics and guard Payton Pritchard agreed to a two-year, $44.2 million contract extension on Tuesday. Writer Ben Handler argues that while this deal represents a maximum allowable extension for Pritchard, it remains a team-friendly bargain for Boston due to the structure of his previous contract and NBA salary cap rules.
Pritchard signed a four-year, $30 million rookie extension in 2023, which caps his new extension at 140% of his previous salary under the CBA. Handler notes the new deal begins in 2028-29, accounting for approximately 11% of the team's salary cap.
