The Story in 60 Seconds

Writing for Over the Monster, Mike Carlucci examines the statistical rarity of the Boston Red Sox's 1-0 victory over the Cleveland Guardians on September 23, 2026. The Red Sox managed to score only one run despite tallying 12 hits, all of which were singles. The performance marked the only instance during the entire 2026 MLB season in which a team registered at least 12 hits while scoring no more than one run.

Carlucci notes that teams with at least 12 hits and one or fewer runs have won only five times in the Wild Card Era since 1995. Boston and the 1997 New York Yankees are the only teams in that span to accomplish the feat without recording an extra-base hit. Across MLB history dating back to 1898, teams recording at least 12 hits and one or fewer runs have won just 22 times.
