A year ago, Esmerlyn Valdez was turning heads in the Arizona Fall League. Now, Jhonny Severino is making a case to follow a similar trajectory.

Writer Emma Lingan argues that Pittsburgh Pirates prospect Jhonny Severino could follow a development path similar to Esmerlyn Valdez after a strong start in the Arizona Fall League. Severino, ranked as the organization's No. 28 prospect, opened his Fall League campaign with a 417-foot two-run homer for the Glendale Desert Dogs on October 6.
The 21-year-old infielder hit 31 home runs and drove in 95 runs across 113 games for High-A Greensboro in 2026. While Lingan notes developmental concerns including Severino's plate discipline and lack of experience above High-A, she suggests his breakout power warrants attention.
