Cole Young is full of praise for how Perry Hill helped him develop into a Gold Glove-level talent, but it also makes things uncomfortable for the Mariners.

Writer Paul Taylor highlights an awkward situation for the Seattle Mariners after second baseman Cole Young was named an AL Gold Glove finalist. Young publicly credited his defensive success to infield coach Perry Hill, who was recently fired by Mariners president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto as part of a coaching staff overhaul following the 2026 season.
While Taylor notes that Seattle's infield ranked last in Major League Baseball with -39 Outs Above Average, Young led American League second basemen in defensive runs saved and fielding percentage under Hill's guidance.
